April 29th
Slight Risk
Tornado Watch
Marshall and Washington counties, KS
I had been watching this setup for a couple days prior to the event. Looked decent with moderate instability and a decent amount of shear. The only real question was the quality of moisture return which wasn't forecast to be real well. A day or two before the event I had targetted Salina, KS but as it got closer to the chase I decided to back off and target farther north because it looked like KS would remain capped and ended up sitting in Nebraska City, NE during the afternoon waiting for initiation. Around 3:00 pm I got a picture text from fellow MN chaser Brad Nelson showing Cu starting to go up south of where he was sitting in Salina, the area I thought would stay capped. After seeing this I bolted southwest in to northeast KS. A tornado watch was issued and warnings started to pop and I thought I was gonna miss the show. By the time I got within sight of the storms the started to look worse and worse on radar and when I actually got on them near Marysville, KSthey looked like crap. After messing around with them a little I noticed a storm to my southwest getting its act together and decided to go for it. Intercepted it just west of Washington, KS. I intercepted it while it was cycling so when I was actually able to pull over and snap a couple pics there wasnt a ton going on. However, the old action area still looked pretty cool along with the new area just to its south. Decided to get a bit east so I wouldnt run in to the RFD and no sooner did I head east did this storm really pick up. I looked out my car window and saw a huge wall cloud to my northwest. Tried to find a good spot to pull over and get pics/vid but this area was surprisingly hilly and tree infested. Finally found a spot to pull over and observe for about 10 minutes. There was a brief tornado with this storm but I never saw it as it was pretty much just a dust whirl under the large wall cloud. The storm was moving at ~45 mph so I didnt have a lot of time to watch it but I continued east but the storm would go on to crap shortly thereafter. I was having a really hard time with data in this area and GR3 wasnt updating at all for me so I was about ready to pack it in when I noticed my warnings were still updating and there were a couple tornado warnings to my west so made a run at those. Got on them and they looked cool visually but by the time I got to them they had gone mostly linear. It wasnt all bad though, I, along with an armada of other chasers, were treated to a great shelf cloud. Met up with Tim Purington, Keith Strang, and Andy Gabrielson in Washington for some dinner before making the long haul home. All in all a cool chase with a little bit of everything. If there had been a little bit more moisture there would have likely been a very nice tornado with that storm near Washington, KS.
This was the first storm I chased near Marysville, KS. Nothing exciting but I've seen worse.

This thing is just spinning like a top:
Tightening up a bit. Keep an eye on the feature to the left of the main wall cloud:
Large funnel to the left of the main wall cloud. Keep in mind these have all been wide angle so I was a bit closer than it seems:
And the awesome shelf along the KS/NE border:
